The Portuguese government welcomes the election of António Vitorino for Director-General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), which was held today, in Geneva, at the Extraordinary Session of IOM’s Council.
António Vitorino’s candidature to this important position clearly reflects the importance that Portugal attaches to matters of migration and, significantly, to the need for global and effective solutions to current migration-related challenges. His election today is the recognition of his undisputed merit, personal skill and professional experience.
Portugal is confident that António Vitorino is the right person to lead the IOM at this critical juncture and that his management of the Organization will help promote peace, security, tolerance, human rights and sustainable development – all of which are at the summit of Portugal’s foreign policy.
The International Organization for Migration is in a vital moment of its history and will be crucial in the implementation of the Global Compact on Migration, which should be adopted until the end of the year.
The Portuguese Government extends its compliments to the other two contenders in this important race, Laura Thompson, from Costa Rica, and Kenneth Isaacs, from the United States, whose engagement and constructive approach through the last few months have undoubtedly contributed to dignifying multilateralism and strengthen the debate on migration.
